When you become a volunteer with the Blue Mountains District of the Rural Fire Service you will undertake an initial safety induction, designed to help you identify potential hazards in your volunteer workplace and familiarise you with Service procedures and settings.
Having completed your Safety Induction, you will then undergo training in Bush Firefighting or Bushfire Support. These courses normally run over approximately 30 hours and are delivered at a District, Team or Zone level.
Having gained one of these qualifications, you may then undertake further training matched to the type of duties you are looking to undertake.

The minimum level of competency needed to fight bush and grass fires.
The level of competency needed to fight small structural, vehicle and similar fires.
The level of competency needed to fight bush and grass fires without direct supervision.
The level of competency needed to manage a crew at a fire or other incident.
The level of competency needed to direct several crews at larger, more complex fires and incidents.
Trainer and Assessor (RFI)
The level of competency needed to instruct on Rural Fire Service courses.
The level of competency needed to assess Rural Fire Service personnel for the issuing of a qualification.
