1957 Bushfires Video
This is the small version of the 1957 Fires Video in WMV format. This 13 minute black-and-white video was produced from never-before-seen footage of the 1957 fires that devastated the villages of Leura and Wentworth Falls.
The footage, discovered by film and video engineer Robert Clyme, was first shown to me by Clyme's colleague Andrew Moyle, a member of Medlow Bath Brigade, in its original 16mm format. Robert then transferred the film into digital format and provided it to the District.
The footage has been edited into a rough storyline and combined with the inspired music of young American composer and musician Jon Bernstein. Although originally written for a theatrical performance, the first time I heard it, I knew this was the perfect music to go with the silent scenes of fire, devastation and human tragedy - scenes that have been repeated throughout the history of white settlement in Australia. I wrote to Jon and asked his permission to use the music, which he immediately gave.
